Swinging, sometimes referred to in North America as the swinging lifestyle, is "non-monogamous sexual activity, treated much like any other social activity, that can be experienced as a couple." [1]

The phenomenon (or at least its wider discussion and practice) may be seen as part of the sexual revolution of recent decades, which has occurred after the upsurge in sexual activity possible due to safer sex practices that became prevalent during these same decades.

Swinging has been called wife swapping, in the past but this term is now archaic, as it is androcentric and does not accurately describe the full range of sexual activities that swingers may take part in.

Ménage à trois

A ménage à trois is the French term describing a relationship or domestic arrangement in which three people, often a married couple and another lover, share a sexual relationship, although the relationship might or might not involve all three persons having sexual relations with each other. The French phrase literally translates as "household of three".

It is also used to refer to an arrangement where three people share sexual relations, and this has become the predominant definition. Some also use it to describe any sex act involving three people, otherwise known as a threesome. Ménage à trois, especially two women with one man, has become more common, perhaps due to its presentation in porn films. There are ménage à trois arrangements involving two men and one woman, but these seem less common (or less socially acceptable).

An orgy may involve four or more people of any gender or sexual orientation. The events themselves may be characterized by sex; for example, a straight orgy would involve only heterosexual sex. Some venues for orgies may be intended for a particular group or groups of people; for example, many sex parties in the United States are restricted to women or couples. In the gay male community, there are nightclubs, bath houses, and internet groups that organize and participate in group sex. Different types of orgies may or may not involve switching partners. Some sex clubs, for example, require entrants to come in pairs and do not typically involve actual physical contact between people in different pairs. Orgies may involve a specific set of sexual activities; for example, some involve BDSM, while "vanilla" orgies do not.

Gang Banging

A gang bang (or gangbang) is a situation in which one individual, either a woman or a man, has sexual intercourse with multiple partners in turn. When a man has sex with several women, it is usually known as a reverse gangbang. It appears to be an American term; its British equivalent would be alley catting. See other definition sections for slang usage of gangbang (affiliation with gangs).

The term has often been used interchangeably with gang rape but is now increasingly applied only to consensual sexual behavior in the sexual swinging community. It exists as a specialized form of group sex and sometimes figures in sexual fantasy. It is also the subject of a genre of pornography, complete with its own sub-genres ("cream pie gang bang", "anal gang bang", "lesbian gang bang", "drunk gang bang" etc).
