B&D
As part of BDSM phrase, B&D is an abbreviation for "Bondage and Discipline"
Bondage
In its most basic sense, the word bondage refers to the state or condition of slavery, indentured servitude, or serfdom.
More generally, "bondage" may refer to any state of subjection to a force, influence, or power.
There tend to be four basic reasons to tie someone up:
- Physical restraint - keeping a person in a specific position, or within specific boundaries, or to prevent escape
- Punishment - placing a person in a position where the body is in pain (ie: strappado)
- Sensory Deprivation - removing stimuli to the body (ie: hoods, vacuum beds, etc.)
- Sexual arousal
In the "BDSM" world, bondage is usually defined by a person who is tied, chained or in some way restrained to induce sexual excitement, and is represented by the letter "B" in the phrase "BDSM".
The word bondage is derived from the Middle English bonde ("serf"), which came from the Old English (Anglo-Saxon) word bōnda ("husbandman")
Bondage is (or can be) an art form, a punishment, sexually exciting, or just plain fun.
Discipline
Discipline is any training intended to produce a specific character or pattern of behaviour, especially training that produces moral, physical, or mental development in a particular direction.
Discipline, while often thought to be a coercive mechanism, can be a collaborative process of building consensus regarding accepted behavior within institutions and society.
In unionised companies, discipline may be a regulated part of a collective bargaining agreement and subject to grievance procedures.
Self-discipline is the ability to manage oneself and one's emotions. Self-discipline is to some extent a substitute for motivation, when one uses reason to determine a best course of action that opposes one's desires.
